Parts of the ancient monastery still exist including the round tower, the chapel as well as the wonderfully sculpted high crosses. Kells also has more modern features such as The Spire of Lloyd (a famine time folly which is a lighthouse 50km from the sea) and Headfort Golf Club with two top quality 18 hole courses 
  • 16 mins drive : Fore Abbey the picturesque ruins of an ancient abbey. Discover the 7 wonders of Fore as you walk around the sheltered safe pathway (approx 4kms), ideal for kids and buggies. Borrow our picnic blanket and picnic basket and bring a packed lunch. 
  • 17 mins drive : Oldcastle is a picturesque Irish village where you will find lovely pub grub in Caffreys , open every Thurs to Sunday. 
  • 17 mins drive : Sheridans Cheesemongers : Visit the home of Sheridans’ cheeses 
  • 23 mins drive : Mullaghmeen Forest : The largest beechwood plantation in Europe with smooth paths for cycling and walking and for pushing a buggy. The kids will love it! 
  • 25 mins drive : Tullynally Castle Gardens , open Thurs to Sunday 11am to 5pm 
  • 26 mins drive : Navan , the capital town of Meath , great for shopping ,theatre , cinema , swimming , horseracing if you want to avoid Dublin. 
  • 28 mins drive : Trim Castle , another historical gem. The main feature being the largest Norman castle in Ireland which was used by Mel Gibson for the movie Braveheart. There are super guided tours all day long in high season. A fabulous 5km river walk along the Boyne-ideal for kids. Water sports also available. 
  • 30 mins drive : Mullingar , the capital town of Westmeath , great for shopping ,theatre , cinema , swimming , greyhound racing if you want to avoid Dublin. 
  • Westmeath is known as the lake county there are many lakes nearby including Lough Bawn, Lough Lene, the mythical Derravaragh. These lakes are brimming with fish, particularly pike and some have small beaches suitable for swimming.
